It is explained how the \u201ccitizens\u2019 observatories\u201d are the basic concept of CITI-SENSE project which empower citizens to contribute and participate in the process of making political decisions concerning the environment. The basic elements of the project, which are based on tools and devices for distributed air pollution monitoring in urban areas, are described. Platforms with low-cost sensors that have been developed within the project are presented.
