The<br \/>\nmodel predicts HCH concentrations in air, seawater,<br \/>\nmarine sediments, and needles well within an order of<br \/>\nmagnitude, often within a factor of 2, and reproduces major<br \/>\nfeatures of the observed differences in space and time.<br \/>\nThe spatial and temporal patterns of HCHs in the Baltic Sea<br \/>\nenvironment are found to be controlled mostly by chemical<br \/>\ninput, both through direct emissions within the drainage<br \/>\nbasin and through advective inflow from adjacent areas, but<br \/>\nvariable environmental conditions can significantly modify the spatial distribution patterns. Simulations with different boundary conditions, i.e., variable assumptions<br \/>\nconcerning advective atmospheric inflow, suggest<br \/>\nthat sources within the drainage basin alone are not<br \/>\ncapable of explaining the observed HCH levels and that<br \/>\nsignificant transport into the region must occur. Deviations<br \/>\nbetween predicted and measured HCH concentrations can often be explained by uncertain estimates of usage and advective import, illustrating the usefulness of the model<br \/>\nfor evaluating the reasonability of emission estimates<br \/>\nand boundary conditions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_searchwp_excluded":"","_id":"","_status":"PUBLISHED","_sync_date":"2026-09-11 21:17:40","footnotes":""},"nva_tax_category":[1099],"class_list":["post-118621","nva_publication","type-nva_publication","status-publish","hentry","nva_tax_category-scientific-journal-publication"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/nilu.gnist.dev\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/nva_publication\/118621","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/nilu.gnist.dev\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/nva_publication"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/nilu.gnist.dev\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/nva_publication"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/nilu.gnist.dev\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/nva_publication\/118621\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/nilu.gnist.dev\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=118621"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"nva_tax_category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/nilu.gnist.dev\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/nva_tax_category?post=118621"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
