Thus, it is vital to ensure a sustainable urban environment.<\/p>\n<p>The European Environmental Agency (EEA) has a key role in promoting such sustainable urban development. Recently, they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/themes\/sustainability-transitions\/urban-environment\/urban-sustainability\">published several outputs on the relevance of cities\u2019 environment transitions towards sustainability<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>NILU has contributed to these publications through two of EEA\u2019s topic centres: The topic centre on Air Pollution, Transport, Noise and Industrial Pollution (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eionet.europa.eu\/etcs\/etc-atni\">ETC\/ATNI<\/a>), and the topic centre on Climate Change Mitigation and Energy (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eionet.europa.eu\/etcs\/etc-cme\">ETC\/CME<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn addition to this, we collaborate with the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) through our joint \u00a0strategic institute initiative project on <a href=\"https:\/\/nilu.com\/project\/2494824\">urban sustainability assessment<\/a>\u201d, says senior scientist Hai-Ying Liu. \u201cWe are happy to contribute with our research to increase sustainability on both city and European level.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today, cities are home to about three out four Europeans, and European urban population will rise to 80% in 2050.
