They all work together to sustain plant life and regulate our planet\u2019s climate.<\/p>\n<h2>Soil salinity<\/h2>\n<p>Soil salinity refers to the concentration of soluble salts in the soil. They can have both natural and human-induced origins.<\/p>\n<p>In regions with arid or semi-arid climates, salts accumulate over time due to factors like mineral weathering and irrigation practices. Soil salinity is typically measured using electrical conductivity of the soil solution. It is represented by the unit of measure called \u201cdecisiemens per meter\u201d (dS m<sup>-1<\/sup>). Higher values indicate higher salinity levels. Image credit: Hassani et al.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Soil Organic Carbon<\/h2>\n<p>Soil organic carbon content (SOC) can be considered the lifeblood of the soil. It consists of a variety of organic materials derived from plant and animal residues, microbial biomass, and decomposed organic substances.<\/p>\n<p>SOC is vital for maintaining soil health and promoting nutrient cycling. Think of it as the fuel that powers the soil ecosystem. \u00a0It provides essential nutrients and energy for microbial activity and plant growth.<\/p>\n<p>It is known that soil salinity impacts SOC, yet the specific direction and magnitude of SOC variability of in relation to soil salinity remain poorly understood.<\/p>\n<h2>The relationship between soil salinity and SOC<\/h2>\n<p>In a recent study, an international team of scientists from Norway, UK, and Germany, has investigated the relationship between soil salinity and SOC.\u00a0 (<a href=\"https:\/\/eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pnas.org%2Fdoi%2F10.1073%2Fpnas.2317332121&amp;data=05%7C02%7Cahas%40nilu.no%7Cecd8b4e7fcec4a0afce808dc66119810%7C220534bf8803473eb063923d72bcef2a%7C0%7C0%7C638497472965851045%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=1H%2Bu893IiNVD3hPXPlw7ST2Kyyl5%2Bseebrn1PlOCUPM%3D&amp;reserved=0\">www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.2317332121<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>The analysis, led by NILU scientist Dr Amirhossein Hassani, revealed a general negative correlation between soil salinity and SOC. An increase in soil salinity was associated with a decline in SOC. Non-croplands experienced a sharper decline compared to croplands.<\/p>\n<p>Besides soil salinity, other environmental factors were found to significantly explain the SOC variability. Soil salinization negatively affects SOC content, which is crucial for soil health, fertility, and climate regulation.<\/p>\n<p>Practices such as improved irrigation management, drainage systems, crop rotation, reduced tillage, and optimized fertilization can help.
