Prosjektet, med kortnavnet "MAGIC", vil inkludere nyvinninger innen atmosfærisk prøvetaking (f.eks. fra Global Atmosphere Watch-stasjoner, GAW) og deteksjon av mikroplast (f.eks. lange tidsserier med målinger) i atmosfæriske sprednings- og inverse modelleringsalgoritmer. Dette vil tillate nøyaktig bestemmelse av de atmosfæriske nivåene, presis kvantifisering av kilder og pålitelig begrensning av det atmosfæriske budsjettet. Viktige prosesser som påvirker den atmosfæriske spredningen av mikroplast skal studeres nøye (så som turbulensindusert resuspensjon og oseanisk utstøting, ikke-sfærisk partikkelmodellering) og modelleres for første gang. Den innhentede kunnskapen vil bli brukt til å svare på MAGICs hovedmål: Å avgjøre mikroplastens rolle i det globale strålingsbudsjettet nå og i fremtiden. Vårt tverrfaglige team er i en unik posisjon til å vurdere tilstanden til atmosfæriske utslipp av mikroplast, samt dynamikken og mikroplastens innvirkning på jordens strålingsbalanse. Dette vil gjøre det mulig å gjennomføre en målrettet undersøkelse og overvåkning av atmosfæriske mikroplastsignaler i atmosfæriske data og spredningsmodeller.
