Vi finner marint plastavfall overalt, men det eksisterer fortsatt store kunnskapshull om geografisk distribusjon og kilder, samt effekter på økosystemet og hvilke metoder som fungerer best for å identifisere og telle plastforurensning. Det arktiske havet og tilstøtende havområder er godt forbundet med Framstredet og Bering-stredet, som øker problemet med marin plastforurensning i Arktis. For å forstå fordelingen og finne løsninger for å redusere plastforurensingen i Arktis, er kunnskap om lokale kilder i Arktis like viktig som en forståelse av transportveiene fra tettbefolkede områder lenger sør. Ved å samarbeide med kinesiske og amerikanske forskergrupper, vil vi også bedre kunne forstå globale plastutslipp samt dele toppmoderne metodikk med disse landene. Utviklingen av masterkurs, feltturer og seminarer i alle involverte land vil bidra til en harmonisert kunnskapsoverføring og danne sterke bånd mellom forskergruppene. Med manglende data på kilder, utslippstørrelser og eksponeringer i hele det marine økosystemet, er det fortsatt mange ubesvarte spørsmål. Imidlertid er noe avgjørende grunnarbeid gjort i JPI Ocean-prosjektene FACTS og ANDROMEDA som samarbeider tett med PlastPoll2021. FACTS tar sikte på å undersøke mikroplast transport fra sør til nord, fra den tyske kysten, langs norske kysten helt til Arktis. ANDROMEDA-prosjektet undersøker tilstedeværelse av MP og sammenligner moderne metodikk i viktige europeiske marine arter og økosystemer.
